A Tale of Possibilities
In a mother’s womb were two babies.
One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?”
The other replies, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”
“Nonsense,” says the other. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?”
“I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now. ”
The other says, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.”
“Well, I think there is something, and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The other replies,
“No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, if there is life, then why has no one ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery, there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”
“Mother? Do you actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”
“She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her, this world would not and could not exist.”
“Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”
To which the other replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”
– a parable from Your Sacred Self by Dr. Wayne Dyer
Trying to grasp life after death is just like this.
This simple parable mirrors one of humanity’s oldest and most profound questions — and perhaps its most unanswerable one. In our modern era, we have placed enormous faith in reason, in proof, in what can be measured and verified. And yet, some of the most important truths have always existed beyond the reach of logic.
What lies beyond this life remains, for most of us, a mystery. But perhaps that mystery is not something to be solved — only held with curiosity, humility, and a certain willingness to wonder.
Different traditions have offered different answers. Some speak of judgment and eternal life. Others of cycles — death and rebirth, karma and liberation. Some point to near-death experiences as glimpses beyond the veil. Philosophers have debated the eternal soul. Scientists have explored the edges of consciousness. And cultures across centuries have each found their own way of making peace with the unknown.
But underneath all of these perspectives lies the same quiet question:
What if there is more?
And perhaps — just like the baby in the womb who could not yet imagine walking, breathing, or seeing light — we are simply not yet equipped to comprehend what awaits us.
The parable does not offer certainty. It offers something rarer — the possibility of trust.
Trust that what comes next, whatever it may be, is not an ending.
Perhaps it is simply the next delivery. 🌿
If this resonated with you, there is more to explore.
